When it comes to energy usage these days a lot of people are looking for alternative energy sources and as such solar power is very much coming into vogue. At its current level of technological evolution, solar power is a useful means of powering small engines to run simple devices. Fans are one such simple device and you will many instances where using a solar powered fan makes more sense than a fan powered by conventional means.

Many manufacturers now offer solar powered attic fans to ventilate and help keep attics cooler. If there is inadequate ventilation in the attic and poor sealing between the attic and the other rooms in the house, attic fans powered by electric means can potentially draw air from the house into the attic. Not only does this compromise energy efficiency but it can also increase the risk of moisture problems in the attic.

Solar powered fans rely on a small solar panel (typically 10 or 20 watt) to power a DC motor when the sun is shining. The fans are installed with intake vents to provide high-capacity powered ventilation without electric operating costs. Most vents are mounted high on the roof near the ridge and are combined with soffit or gable vents for balanced intake and exhaust air streams. Ventilation is only provided when there is ample sunshine to power the fan motor. The highest fan speed will tend to coincide with the greatest heat from the sun and consequently the greatest need for attic ventilation. By reducing attic temperature, attic fans can help reduce summertime cooling loads while at the same time providing ventilation without the added utility load.

Using solar energy to power air vents in your attic means you eliminate the need for electrical wiring in this part of the house and as a solar ventilator uses no electricity you are also avoiding any ongoing operating costs. You will find that the equipment costs for a solar powered attic fan are higher than those of a conventionally powered fan (around $200 more) but this will usually be offset by the money you save in not having to extend electrical wiring into the attic. In addition to attics you will also find solar powered fans used in greenhouses, outhouses, garages, sheds, out-buildings, and paint rooms.
Retail prices for solar powered attic fans range from about $350 to $600 depending on ventilation capacity, the manufacturer, and optional features such as a thermostat.

In instances of new construction, roofers will usually install powered ventilating units. If these units are solar powered roof vents there will be no need for an electrician to rough and finish wire the units. For retrofit projects, a roofer or do-it-yourselfer will be able to install a solar-powered attic fan using conventional tools and techniques.

Whilst not applicable in every instance where cooling is required, solar powered attic fans are an example of smart thinking utilizing a natural energy source.

South Africa is currently facing a two-pronged energy crisis a shortage of electricity and oil at over $100 a barrel. The sun produces enough energy to provide for almost all of the power requirements of the world if this free energy can be harnessed. South Africa is blessed with a climate that is dominated by sunshine, making it an ideal candidate for developing solar power to complement and possibly replace the use of fossil fuels in the production of electricity.

An associate is developing a domestic solar power system using alternative technology. If this works, this could cause a revolution in the generation of electricity as the majority of people in sunny climates could become self-sufficient in their electricity needs. The bonus is that the energy is free, infinitely renewable and does not produce any harmful emissions.

Two main systems are currently in use for harnessing the sun energy. The use of solar panels to provide hot water using the sun’s thermal power, and photo volactic or PV panels that transform the sun’s light emitting properties to produce electricity.

A third route is to use the sun’s thermal power to produce electricity. The world’s largest solar powered generator is in development in Israel’s dessert area the Negev. The system uses a huge array of curved mirrors to heat oil that in turn heats water to produce steam. The steam powers large turbines that produce electricity that can be distributed as part of the national electricity grid. The heat produced exceeds 260 degrees Celsius.

The still to be developed domestic solution works on a similar but scaled down principle. Mirrors with a sun-tracking device focus the sun’s rays onto a small area. The heat produced is used to power a small steam turbine that produces electricity directly to the household. Surplus power is stored in large purpose built batteries to provide for night-time power needs. At present the main unknowns are the amount of space required for the mirrors. Will the average household have enough space to be able to use this system effectively, or will it be necessary to move to a power sharing system where one unit is used to power several houses?

The more established systems are currently being used for thermal heating to supply the majority of a household’s hot water needs. This has been widely used in Israel for the last fifty years. For other household requirements PV panels have been used effectively to provide lighting and other electrical requirements. The main problem of using the PV system is that it requires a huge investment to provide for even a portion of current electricity needs.

One company that has employed solar power in its buildings is BP. The roof of its Cape Town head office is covered in PV units, and the entire building has been designed to be energy and light efficient.

At present there are limitations to using solar power. These include the prohibitive cost of PV panels and the amount of sunshine available per day to tap into. PV panels are able to make use of light even when the sky is overcast, but electricity cannot be generated directly from the sun during the night. Harnessing solar energy to produce power has not been a top priority of most governments in the past, but the potential for solar power as a major source of energy is a reality.

As I am sure you have noticed the cost of your electricity and gas keeps rising year after year, this inculded with more people looking to move to living a more carbon friendly lifestyle, many of us are starting to look into alternative ways to power our homes. One of the most popular is through using solar power.

How much is it going to cost.

The easiest way to get a solar powered home would to be buy or build a home that solar power designed into it from the beginning, but this is not an option for many. The exact price tag to kit your house out with solar powered system, depends on a number of factors, that include the following:

1. Where do you live? The area you live in can have a big difference on how well solar power will work at your home. For example, the Seattle area may receive on average about three hours of sun a day since it’s a rainy region while places in Arizona and Texas receive six to eight hours. Obviously, the more sun you get, the more efficient your solar power would be.

2. How much electricity do you actually use in a month? Because each month may fluctuate wildly, you will have to get a history of your electrical usage per month and round it out and determine how much it is per kilowatt hour.

3. Space availability is another factor for installing a system for solar power. First of all, you would need a place free of obstructions. Your solar panels will need full access to the sun; therefore no buildings, trees or other structures that would create shade should be nearby.

4. Do you plan to go straight solar power all the way or install a system, which allows for electricity access from the power company as needed? Also, will you try to purchase an entire solar power system or choose an option, which allows you to add components as your budget allows?

From the above you can see there a couple of points you have to think about before deciding if Solar Power would be a good idea for your home. You may have the money to install a complete system straight from scratch, but the better option may be to buy a unit that will allow you to add components inline with your budget and time. The best place to look would be in your local yellow pages, or the internet that should give you a good idea of what is available. The upside to solar power energy for the home is that you may get some tax credits! It depends on the state in which you live so you might want to look into whether you will get any returns such as a portion of the installation costs refunded to you.

Once you have got the unit, the next thing to think about is actually installing it. If you are very handy at home and understand the basics of electricity and mechanical things, chances are that you could probably handle the project on your own. However, before you make that ultimate decision, you will want to check out the warranty for your equipment that you buy. Some manufacturers will void a warranty if a licensed professional does not install it. So you have to take the additional cost of installation into account if that scenario occurs.

Just remember that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to solar power. If you take into account all of the factors listed above, you will be able to make an informed decision as to which system would work best for your needs and lifestyle.

The main sources of alternative power are the following:

• energy producing crops: synthetic biofuels and direct combustion;
• wind power and power from waves and tides;
• hydroelectric (water) power;
• solar power: heat and electricity;
• heat power: from man-made and natural waste products and from the making of synthetic bio-fuels;

By definition, an energy resource is renewable if it is replaced at a rate equal to or faster than the rate at which it is consumed. Renewable energy is therefore also considered sustainable energy, since it will continue to be available in unending supply even as it’s being utilized. Renewable energy has also been given the moniker alternative energy in reference to the alternative it offers to conventional, non-renewable sources.

Renewable energy can be utilized in one of two ways:

• directly: as in water mills, windmills, solar ovens, geothermal heating;
• indirectly: using the renewable resources to create other sources of power, either as fuels (biodiesel, bioethanol, biogas) or by generating electricity (wind turbines, solar panels).

Before renewable energy replaces the conventional sources of power that we’re used to (ie. public utility grid power), it will take years of research and development, continually studying, experimenting, improving, and innovating. The study of renewable energy, its applications and repercussions is concerned with environmental, economical, social, and political factors.

The reasons for switching from conventional, non-renewable energy to renewable energy are vast and varied, and the list grows larger every day. Among them are:

• it has a small to nil environmental impact with little to no harmful emissions, as a result supporting and protecting our natural ecosystem for future generations to enjoy;

• supplementing utility power with renewable power allows you a precious and invaluable backup system in the case of emergencies such as power outages and shortages;

• once a renewable energy system is installed, the energy costs a consistent amount to use year-round – as opposed to utilities that fluctuate in price throughout the year based on seasonal as well as socio-political factors;

• it is “distributed” energy, or energy that is used in the same location where it is produced – this cuts down considerably on transportation and distribution costs;

• many local and state governments as well as the federal government offer incentives in the form of tax breaks for the production and use of renewable energies;

• if you produce more power using renewable resources than you need for your own personal use, you can actually sell that power back to the utility companies in a program called “net metering”.

To complete a truly well-rounded discussion on renewable energy, there must be equal time given to its drawbacks as to its benefits. The most prevalent concerns about the long-term viability of renewable energies are that it is extremely dependent on numerous climactic factors and that it is considered “diluted” energy in that much more is needed to generate much less power. These so-called drawbacks, however, are no reason not to continue a fervent pursuit of incorporating renewable energy usage into more and more parts of our everyday lives. They are only to keep us present to the issues we must address in order to make a widespread switch to renewable energies a viable reality.
